5 Kitchen Design Mistakes You Should Never Make, According to Professionals

To make mistakes is human, but when you can avoid them, why not?

Your kitchen is your sacred place. The most important and most used room in our homes needs to be well taken care of. It should be cozy, efficient and bring everything and everyone together. Whether you’re making multi-course meals, or just a simple bowl of pasta, everything tastes better when it’s made in a fully furnished and well-equipped kitchen.

With that being said, designing a kitchen that is both practical and exquisite is not as easy as we’d think. But even though it can be quite a difficult task, it doesn’t mean that we should allow ourselves to make huge mistakes in our kitchen design. In this article, we’re going to talk about five kitchen design mistakes that you should never make, according to professionals.

Mistake no. 1: Forcing

In 2022 we have a lot of options, especially when it comes to kitchen design. A lot of colors, styles, and materials – and everyone is claiming that every product is much needed, if not essential. But just because some cabinets, colors, and materials, for example, work in certain homes, it doesn’t mean these belong to your kitchen too. Sometimes the most popular pieces won’t even fit in most of the kitchen layouts. And these pieces won’t make any sense.

Not to mention that a lot of us try to fit in, to create something that everybody will like, but we rarely ask ourselves – do we like it? In the end, it’s your kitchen, and you should design it as you like, and not because some trend says so. That’s why educating yourself on certain topics when it comes to kitchen design is crucial. The inevitable truth is that you’re going to spend quite a lot of time, energy, and money, so make sure you’re not forcing anything, and you’re making decisions for yourself.

Mistake no. 2: Clutter

Clutter is the worst enemy of every home, especially in the kitchen. Even though appliances are lifesavers, most frequently used and essential to the kitchen can make real clutter that just disturbs the kitchen’s peace. This mistake is usually overlooked, cluttered countertops are something that is regularly seen in photos, movies, and commercials. We are programmed to think that clutter is an indispensable part of our lives.

In fact clutter makes us feel tired, unmotivated, and easily irritable. To avoid this mistake, think about what you need. Appliances make convenient, but not all of them are essential. You can store them in your cabinets and take them whenever you need them to leave your countertops empty and clean. And also, a great idea comes from minimalists – let your drawers be filled to only 50%. That way, you won’t have to worry about organizing your kitchen and clutter.

Mistake no. 3: Darkness

Keeping an accent on the natural elements in your home is probably one of the best pieces of advice that have ever been given. This applies especially to kitchen design, where even the smallest changes can make a big difference. When we talk about natural elements in your kitchen, we mostly think of letting nature be part of it. Open your curtains, let some natural light and fresh air in, and you’ll instantly have a much spacier and newer kitchen.

How? Well, natural light brings an illusion of bigger space. Not to mention that the sun gives us an essential vitamin D, and that right light makes everything look younger. Taking pics in the golden hour? That’s it! So, next time you decide to make some changes in your home, start with your kitchen and add some light in. It will change your life!

Mistake no. 4: Shine

Adding some shine to your kitchen doesn’t have to be too much, as one would think. Stainless steel appliances are a great way to start, but why stop there? These pieces set the overall tone of the kitchen, so why not mix many high-quality materials to make it more efficient, and more interesting? Add some metal finish to your hardware, lighting, and even dishes! Your kitchen will instantly appear more luxurious and elegant!

Mistake no. 5: Details

Details can be both – our best friends and our enemies – it all depends on how we use them. Details should be used for adding more elegance, a bit of luxurious touch to everything we decorate. The key to successful designing isn’t in using last-trend decorations (remember when we talked about forcing things at the beginning?). Details should be sophisticated and used to highlight only the best in our homes. In kitchens, it’s better to start small, almost minimalist. For example, adding more golden items in the kitchen that already has golden hardware is a bit too much. Try adding some natural pieces, like plants, or flowers. Mix everything, but don’t overdo it – that’s the secret.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder – in this case, you. You must do what makes you happy, it’s your home and your most-used room. Listen to yourself and your heart and you’ll avoid every possible mistake.

And don’t forget that whatever you like the most will still be in trend in ten or twenty or even fifty years from now. It’s about what you like, and not about what everyone else thinks about it.
